Rafael Jodar on the Brink of Breaking the Record for the Fastest Rise to the Top 10

Rafael Jodar is exceptionally close to shattering the record for the quickest ascent into the top 10 of men's tennis history. This remarkable achievement is within reach after his victory over Arthur Fils in the Canadian Open semi-finals.

The 19-year-old Spaniard defeated France's Fils with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Currently, he holds the 11th position in the live ATP rankings.

Jodar is set to enter the top 10 if he wins his semi-final match against Brandon Nakashima. However, if Ben Shelton also reaches the final, Jodar would need to defeat the American to secure his top 10 spot.

The existing record for the shortest duration between entering the top 100 and then reaching the top 10 is held by Boris Becker. He achieved this feat in 210 days at the age of 18 back in 1985.

Should Jodar achieve this milestone in Canada, he will have done so in an astonishingly short period of just 140 days.

Even if Jodar doesn't quite make it into the top 10 during this tournament, strong performances at the upcoming Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati or at the US Open would almost certainly be sufficient for him to break the record.

Jodar's meteoric rise has significantly outpaced the progress of other prominent male tennis players of the 21st century.

His compatriot Carlos Alcaraz took 336 days to transition from the top 100 to the top 10, while Novak Djokovic required 623 days.

Both Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner needed 735 days, and Roger Federer took 973 days to achieve the same.

In women's tennis, the record stands at 203 days, set by Jennifer Capriati in 1990 when she was just 14 years old.

The win against Fils marks Jodar as the first teenager since Stefanos Tsitsipas in 2018 to reach the quarter-finals in Montreal. He is also the first player born in 2006 or later to reach a Masters 1000 semi-final.

Jodar currently has one tour title to his name, having won the Grand Prix Hassan II on clay in Marrakech, Morocco, earlier this year.
